Getting there and back
Cretan night pickup: the bus and getting home
How pickup works, which resort areas are covered, what the long drive is like and what to do if your hotel is not on the list.
Book the Cretan night ↗Quick answer
Collection and drop-off come with the Pano Karouzanos ticket, at hotels and pickup points around Heraklion and the resort coast to the east. The booking page lists your stops once you choose a date. The bus ride is well over an hour each way on a mountain road, so allow about six hours door to door.
How pickup works
On the Pano Karouzanos night, pickup is part of the ticket, not an extra. You pick a date in the booking calendar, and the stops for that date are listed once you check availability. They are set per hotel or pickup point, so the stop and the time depend on where you stay. The drop-off list mirrors the pickup list. Read the details once when you book and again before the day, and keep a screenshot of them in case your signal drops on the road.
Where the pickup points are
The pickup list covers Heraklion city and the resort strip along the north coast to the east. Areas named include Ammoudara, Agia Pelagia, Kokkini Hani, Gouves, Anissaras, Hersonissos, Stalida, Analipsi and Malia. Hersonissos, a resort area, lies about 25 kilometres east of Heraklion, so the pickup run is long and the bus collects guests in a sequence along the coast. Because the list is long, the time you are collected depends on where you stay, so look at your own stop rather than the evening's start time on a friend's booking.
The ride up
After the last pickup the bus drives up into the mountains toward Karouzanos. The ride is well over an hour each way, and guests describe the road as winding. Many guests like the drive for the scenery, and the guide on board offers live guiding in English, German, French and Polish. If you are prone to travel sickness, tell the guide as you board, and take your usual remedy before you leave. Bring water, and a light layer for the hills, so that the hour on the road costs you as little as possible.
In the village
On arrival there is free time to stroll the narrow streets of Karouzanos, look at the old houses and take in the view of the Cretan mountains. This is the time to take photographs, because after the stroll the evening moves to the stage and the table. Keep an eye on the time and listen for the guide's instructions, so that you are back with the group when it is time to go. Take the photographs first and put your phone away afterwards, because the rest of the evening is for the music and the dancing.
The ride home
After the show and dinner, the bus takes you back to the stops on your booking. The drop-off list mirrors the pickup list, and guests mention a change of vehicle on the way, so stay with your group at each transfer and check which bus carries your stop. The return is the end of a long evening: the whole trip takes about six hours from pickup to drop-off, so plan to be back late and avoid early commitments the next morning. If you travel with children or older relatives, build in a quiet hour afterwards before anything else.
If your hotel is missing from the stops
If your hotel or apartment is not among the stops, message the operator after you book. Guests report that the operator has arranged a stop on the route in this situation, and that the reply was accommodating. Give your accommodation name and your booking reference, and check that the stop is confirmed before the day. This is the one thing worth sorting out early, because the stop determines your time, your seat and how long you spend on the bus.
